Dyslexia/Reading Tutoring
Reading or Dyslexia Tutoring
Reading tutoring and dyslexia remediation first begins with a full academic evaluation to determine student strengths and weaknesses. Included in this assessment is a 30-minute parent meeting to discuss results and next steps. Once both parties have committed to pursuing reading tutoring, I will administer a variety of specific reading screeners. These screeners include the Barton Reading and Spelling Screener and the Phonological Awareness Screening Test (PAST). Occasionally, I may also recommend additional comprehension testing to distinguish difficulties and inform instruction.
Most reading students will use the Barton Reading and Spelling System. The Barton Reading and Spelling System is an Orton-Gillingham inspired and multi-sensory method of teaching reading and spelling. These methods strengthen phonological awareness and teach students the necessary reading skills of blending, segmenting, and deleting sounds in a hands-on way using tiles. Once the early reading skills are in place, students then work through levels that introduce letters, sounds, blends, digraphs, and spelling rules systematically and in a decodable series. Barton employs dictation, phrasing, and grammar as well to remediate struggling readers and encourage reading fluency.
Beyond Barton, I often pull in additional tutoring resources, depending on the needs of the individual student. These may include supports for visual discrimination and tracking, handwriting or dysgraphia books and exercises, increased phoneme drills, or higher level syllabication resources. I adjust the pacing of material and the methods to fit each of my students. No two students are alike; neither should their tutoring be!
One hour reading tutoring sessions are required at least twice weekly to ensure the most progress possible.
